Wife to King Cepheus of Ethiopia, who angered the Nereids by boasting herself a greater beauty than the Nereids, the nymph daughters of the Tiran Nereus. Charged, with her husband, by Poseidon, to sacrifice their daughter, Andromeda, to appease the Nereids. Poseidon sent Cetus (the Whale,) but Andromeda was rescued by Perseus. For Cassiopeia’s vanity, Poseidon placed her in the sky, set to circle the celestial pole and remain upside down for half the year as punishment for her vanity.
